Pull

My first attempt at the pull animation, after producing a few tests to understand how the puppet moves, was successful at creating the illusion of weight. My plan for the pull was to focus on key poses, based on my analysis of pulling actions, I knew that weight was balanced quickly between different poses, which were then held to express stress in the body. Additional movements were interlaced in the action to add to the realism of weight balance, such as the feet stepping back and sliding across the surface.

After a peer review (of the clip on the top left side) I collected notes on what to improve:

  • Introduce a short pause at the beggining, this helps the audiance ease into the action.
  • The animation was decribed as 'crunchy' by Mary, explaining that that the action could have been smoother at parts.
  • The end of the rope, alough well handled, is distracting and draws away from the key action.

These criticism were then applied to my next test (top right clip). I added a short pause at the beginning to allow time for the audience to read the image, this also created anticipation for the action. To avoid 'crunchy' animation I only focused on string key poses, avoiding any back turns or long stretched positions. The end of the rope was eliminated, now the action was purely targeted between the hands and rock, taking away the distraction of an end rope swaying between pulls.
